You know what really got me about The Fern? I wasn’t expecting much from the name – sounds like some generic eco-lodge, right? But this split-level setup in Sydney actually surprised me. The moment you walk in, there’s this gorgeous courtyard that feels like someone’s secret garden tucked away from the city noise. I mean, you’re still in Sydney, but somehow they’ve created this little oasis where you can actually hear birds instead of traffic.
The split-level thing works better than I thought it would. Downstairs you’ve got your living area with these huge windows that look out onto all that greenery, and upstairs feels properly separate for sleeping. Honestly, it’s one of those places where you might actually want to hang out in your room instead of just crashing there. The courtyard is where I spent most mornings with coffee – there’s something about having breakfast surrounded by ferns and native plants that makes you forget you’re in the middle of a major city. Check-in was smooth enough, though they seem to get pretty busy around 3 PM, so maybe aim for earlier or later if you can.
Location-wise, you’re well-positioned without being right in the tourist chaos. It’s the kind of spot where you can walk to decent restaurants and cafes (there’s this little place around the corner that does incredible flat whites), but you’re not dealing with the constant foot traffic of the main drags. Parking was actually manageable – and trust me, that’s saying something for Sydney. The staff genuinely seemed to know the area well, not just the obvious tourist spots, which I always appreciate. The 4-star rating feels about right; it’s polished and comfortable without being stuffy or over-the-top fancy. Sure, you might hear the occasional door closing from neighboring rooms, but nothing that kept me up at night. What really sold me was how they’ve managed to create this sense of being somewhere special without trying too hard – the kind of place where you’d want to extend your stay by a day or two, just to spend more time in that courtyard.
