Coogee Sands Hotel & Apartments
You know what struck me first about Coogee Sands? It’s actually right where you want to be without feeling like you’re stuck in some tourist trap. I mean, you’re literally a two-minute walk from Coogee Beach – and I’m talking about the good end of the beach, not the crazy crowded bit near the main strip. The hotel sits on Dolphin Street, which honestly sounds more scenic than it is (it’s just a regular street), but the location works perfectly because you’re close enough to hear the ocean if you get a decent room, but far enough back that you’re not dealing with the weekend beach crowd noise.
The thing about this place is it gets the apartment-hotel balance right. I’ve stayed in plenty of these hybrid places where you end up with a cramped hotel room with a sad kitchenette shoved in the corner, but here the apartments actually feel like, well, apartments. The kitchens are properly sized – you could honestly cook a real meal if you wanted to, though with all the good spots along Coogee Bay Road, you probably won’t. The balconies vary a lot depending on which room you get, so it’s worth asking when you book. Some face the street (fine, but nothing special), others get glimpses of the water, and if you’re lucky, you might snag one of the corner units with decent ocean views.
What I really appreciate is how they handle the whole beach hotel thing without going overboard. There’s no pretentious pool area trying to compete with the actual beach – just a decent-sized pool that’s perfect for a quick dip when the surf’s too rough or you want to rinse off the salt. The staff actually knows the area, which sounds basic but you’d be surprised how many places hire people who can’t tell you where to grab good coffee (try Gertrude & Alice, by the way – it’s about a five-minute walk toward the beach). Parking can be a bit of a pain during peak season, but they’ve got spaces and honestly, in Coogee, having any parking at all is pretty good. The whole area gets packed between December and February, so if you’re coming then, just accept that everything will be busier and book dinner spots ahead of time.
The rooms themselves are clean and comfortable – nothing fancy, but they’ve clearly put thought into the details. Good shower pressure, which matters more than people admit, and the beds are actually comfortable, not just hotel-firm. I stayed in one of the one-bedroom apartments and there was plenty of space to spread out, which you need when you’re dealing with sandy beach clothes and wet towels. The air conditioning works well too, which you’ll definitely need in summer. It’s not a luxury resort, but it’s solidly run and gets the important stuff right. Plus, that 8.8 rating isn’t just for show – you can tell they actually care about the guest experience rather than just going through the motions.
