So you know how most fancy hotels in Sydney feel like they’re trying way too hard? Well, The Darling at The Star is actually the opposite – it’s got this effortless luxury thing going on that somehow works perfectly. I mean, when you walk into the lobby, there’s this immediate sense that you’re somewhere special, but not in that stuffy, intimidating way. The staff actually remembers your name after one conversation, which honestly surprised me.
The location on Pyrmont Street is pretty brilliant if you think about it. You’re literally steps from the harbor, and I’m talking about the good part of the harbor where you can actually walk around without dodging cruise ship crowds. Darling Harbour is right there (hence the name, I suppose), but you’re also close enough to walk to Barangaroo if you want something a bit more local. The rooms face different directions, so if you can swing it, ask for harbor views – watching the sunrise over the water from your bed is worth the extra cost. The blackout curtains are actually effective too, which matters more than you’d think when you’re dealing with jet lag.
What really got me was the attention to detail without being fussy about it. The bathroom amenities are this perfect middle ground between fancy and practical – you know what I mean? Like, the shower pressure is incredible (seriously, one of the best hotel showers I’ve experienced), and the robes are the kind you want to steal but definitely shouldn’t. The bar downstairs has this view that makes you forget you’re in a casino complex, and the cocktails are – well, let’s just say they know what they’re doing. Parking can be a bit of a maze since you’re dealing with The Star’s whole setup, but valet takes care of it, and honestly, you probably won’t need your car much anyway. The ferry wharf is a five-minute walk, which is how locals actually get around the harbor anyway. Check-in was smooth even during what seemed like a busy weekend, and they had this way of making the whole process feel personal rather than transactional. If you’re visiting during summer, the pool area gets some serious afternoon sun, and the city views from up there are pretty spectacular – just bring sunscreen because that Sydney sun doesn’t mess around.
Guests are required to show a photo ID and credit card at check-in.
