Hotel Harry, Ascend Hotel Collection
You know what caught me off guard about Hotel Harry? The lobby actually feels like somewhere you’d want to hang out, not just rush through to get to your room. It’s got this whole industrial-chic thing going on that somehow works perfectly in Surry Hills – exposed brick, leather sofas that look lived-in rather than precious, and enough natural light streaming through those big windows to make you forget you’re in the middle of Sydney’s urban jungle.
The location is honestly pretty brilliant if you’re the type who likes to walk everywhere. Wentworth Avenue isn’t exactly the prettiest street in Sydney (let’s be real), but you’re literally a five-minute stroll from Crown Street’s café strip and about the same distance to Central Station if you need to hop on a train. I mean, the sound of traffic is definitely there – you’ll hear it with the windows open – but it’s that constant city hum rather than jarring noise, and honestly, it sort of fades into the background after the first night. The rooms themselves are bigger than I expected for this part of town, with these really comfortable beds that don’t feel like hotel standard issue. The bathroom situation is solid too – decent water pressure, which anyone who’s stayed in converted Sydney buildings will tell you isn’t always a given.
What I really appreciated was how the staff seemed to actually know the neighborhood. When I asked about dinner spots, the guy at the front desk didn’t just hand me a generic tourist map – he told me about this little Vietnamese place on Cleveland Street that I never would have found otherwise, and warned me that the trendy brunch spot around the corner gets absolutely slammed on weekends (he was right). The 7.1 rating makes sense to me – it’s not trying to be the fanciest place in Sydney, but it gets the important stuff right without any major fumbles. Check-in was smooth, the Wi-Fi actually worked throughout the building, and housekeeping was thorough without being intrusive. There’s something refreshing about a place that knows exactly what it is and delivers on that promise. If you’re looking for a rooftop pool or concierge service, you’ll want to look elsewhere, but if you want a comfortable base in one of Sydney’s most walkable neighborhoods – somewhere you can grab amazing coffee two blocks away and catch a show at the Belvoir Theatre practically next door – Hotel Harry does exactly what it says on the tin.
