Hotel Description

You know what struck me first about the Upper Chapel Loft Apartment? It’s actually in a converted church building on Cope Street – and I mean, you can still see some of the original architectural details that remind you this place has stories. The whole Redfern area has this gritty-meets-trendy vibe that’s honestly grown on me over the years, and this spot sits right in the sweet spot where you’re close enough to everything but not drowning in tourist crowds.

The apartment itself feels more like staying at a friend’s place than a typical hotel room, which is either perfect or completely wrong depending on what you’re after. The loft setup means you’ve got this nice sense of space – high ceilings, exposed brick in places, that sort of industrial-chic thing Sydney does so well. I appreciated the full kitchen because, let’s be real, eating out for every meal in Sydney will drain your wallet faster than you’d think. The bed’s comfortable enough, though the stairs up to the loft area might be a bit much if you’re hauling heavy luggage or have mobility issues. What I really loved was how quiet it gets at night – Redfern’s changed a lot from its rougher days, and Cope Street feels surprisingly peaceful after dark.

Location-wise, you’re about a 10-minute walk to Redfern Station, which honestly makes getting around the city pretty straightforward. The coffee scene nearby is fantastic (there’s this little place called Gumption Coffee that locals actually go to), and you’re close enough to Surry Hills that you can wander over for dinner without much planning. I wouldn’t call it the most polished accommodation experience – the 7.7 rating feels about right because there are some rough edges, maybe the WiFi could be stronger, and the building’s quirks mean things like water pressure can be hit or miss. But if you’re the type who prefers character over cookie-cutter perfection, and you want to stay somewhere that feels connected to actual Sydney rather than tourist Sydney, this place delivers. Just don’t expect concierge service or daily housekeeping – it’s more like borrowing someone’s cool apartment for a few days.

    It was great to be so central and the access arrangements worked well. It is an unusual and funky space.

    The location is very strategic as it is very close to CBD, Airport and also toll ways to western and Easter suburbs via M4 & M5. We can also find parking easily in the street.

    What could be improved: No AC except fan.

    There has refrigerator is so convenient!

    What could be improved: The bathroom is too small, just like an mobile toilet with the shower room.
    And also there has the cockroach issue, hope your place could have the cockroach poison to kill them…

    The flat is perfect, lot of space, we loved it. The code to get The Keys was very practical and easy.

    What could be improved: At some point there was not hot water, and then no water at all, but it didn't last and didn't happen again.

    The apartment is very comfortable, we were a family of 4 and we were super well, beautiful design, very complete equipment, and the location is excellent, 10 minutes by car from Sydney opera house.
    And you also have the metro station 5 minutes walk away.
    In short, a 10-point experience, the owner's attention was also excellent, every time we asked something he responded very quickly and always tried to help us.

    Tia and Gerard were extremely accommodating and the loft accomodation was brilliant. There are two double beds, one on the mezzanine and one in the large open downstairs area which was great as we hadn’t realised there would be two beds so we didn’t need to share. The air con is excellent and the kitchen and bathrooms are fully equipped including an air fryer and a Dyson hairdryer, which we didn’t use but was great to see such good appliances on hand. Bathrooms also had nice shampoo, conditioner and body wash. The location was perfect for us due to staying close to family. A highly recommended stay. Thank you for having us.
