Look, I’ve stayed at my fair share of Sydney hotels, and The Ultimo honestly surprised me. Walking up to 37 Ultimo Road, you’re not exactly in the thick of the CBD chaos – which is actually perfect if you ask me. It’s tucked away enough that you won’t hear the George Street crowd stumbling home at 2am, but close enough that you can walk to Darling Harbour in about ten minutes. The building itself has this modern industrial vibe that fits perfectly with the whole Ultimo neighborhood transformation – you know how this area used to be all warehouses and now it’s got that cool urban renewal thing going on.
What really got me was how the staff actually seemed to know the area. Check-in was smooth (they’ve got that down to a science), but when I asked about grabbing dinner, the guy behind the desk didn’t just hand me a generic tourist map. He told me about this little Vietnamese place on Harris Street that I never would’ve found otherwise, and mentioned that the Thursday night markets at Haymarket were worth the walk. The rooms themselves are solid – I mean, it’s a 4-star place so you’re getting decent space and comfortable beds, but there’s attention to detail that you don’t always see. The bathroom had one of those rainfall showers that actually works properly, and honestly, the blackout curtains were a godsend after a long flight.
Here’s the thing about staying in Ultimo – you’re perfectly positioned for both the business district and the fun stuff. Central Station is literally a five-minute walk, which makes getting to the airport dead simple, and if you’re heading to Circular Quay or the Opera House, you’re looking at maybe 15 minutes on foot through some pretty decent scenery. The neighborhood has this interesting mix of university students (UTS is right there), young professionals, and tourists who’ve figured out that staying slightly off the main drag is actually smarter. There’s a Woolworths practically next door for grabbing snacks or whatever, and the building’s got that secure entry thing that makes you feel like you’re staying somewhere locals would actually choose. I’d definitely book here again – it’s got that sweet spot of being comfortable without trying too hard, and the location just works for pretty much whatever you’re doing in Sydney.
