Hotel Description

You know what struck me first about The Russell? It’s tucked into this heritage building on George Street that somehow feels completely removed from the chaos outside, even though you’re literally in the thick of everything. I mean, you step through that door and suddenly the city noise just… disappears. The lobby has this old-world charm – think polished wood and vintage touches – but it’s not trying too hard to be fancy, which I actually appreciate.

The location is honestly perfect if you want to be walking distance from everything that matters. You’re maybe three minutes from Circular Quay, so catching ferries or just wandering down to the Opera House becomes this casual evening thing rather than a planned expedition. And here’s something most visitors don’t realize – you’re right next to The Rocks, but positioned just far enough up George Street that you avoid the weekend tourist crowds while still being close enough to duck into those little laneway bars when the mood strikes. The hotel sits in this sweet spot where business travelers mix with tourists, so there’s energy without the backpacker hostel vibe.

What really sets The Russell apart is how they’ve managed to maintain character in a city where so many places feel generic. The rooms aren’t huge – I mean, we’re talking Sydney CBD real estate here – but they’re thoughtfully designed with these lovely period features that remind you you’re staying somewhere with actual history. The staff genuinely seem to know the neighborhood; when I asked about a good spot for coffee that wasn’t overrun with tourists, they pointed me toward this little place on Argyle Street that I never would have found otherwise. Honestly, that kind of local knowledge is worth its weight in gold when you’re trying to experience a city beyond the guidebook highlights. The building can get a bit creaky at night – it’s got character, let’s put it that way – but the trade-off is staying somewhere that feels authentic rather than cookie-cutter. Plus, with a 9.2 rating, clearly most people think the charm outweighs any minor quirks. If you’re the type who wants to be in the heart of things but values personality over pristine modernity, The Russell hits that balance perfectly.

Reviews

  • The stay was fantasic would highly recommend – Maria from Australia – 11 July 2025 (10/10)

The location was great, room was comfortable and the food delicious. We had a great weekend away

What could be improved: Bit of a rabbit warren with corridors everywhere, easy to get lost.

  • Exceptional Place To Stay – Ashlyn from New Zealand – 5 July 2025 (10/10)

Amazing staff especially the French man at reception during the day. He was exceptional with customer service (I forgot his name) he made everything easy and looked after our bags for us after arriving in from a cruise. All staff were so lovely. Shared bathroom was so clean and little comforts like robes provided. They even write a personal card. I have traveled a lot and never had a personal card. The restaurant downstairs was also amazing. Best place in Sydney if you want great hospitality.

What could be improved: My only downside is there are many stairs so not as suitable perhaps for people who cant carry their bags. There is an elevator to take you up and down but still need to get down a couple of stairs. Was fine for fit people.

  • Very good – Paul from Australia – 30 June 2025 (8/10)

Hotel above the "Fortune of War" pub, Sydney's oldest Pub, just a quick walk down the stairs and you're in the bar or restaurant, excellent location in The Rocks, and near Circular Quay and the Opera house. The hotel has been recently renovated and was very nice and comfortable.

What could be improved: We were told our room had a kettle, but it didn't, but it was only a short walk down the hall to an instant boiling water tap, so it wasn't a big deal, it did mean you had to leave the room though.

  • Exceptional – Belinda from Australia – 25 June 2025 (10/10)

Perfect location, beautiful room, really good shower pressure. Highly recommend definitely stay there again.

  • I can’t say enough positive things about this place. The staff were so friendly and helpful. – John from Australia – 24 June 2025 (10/10)

Everything.. so close to everything and my favourite pub The Fortune Of War next door. The breakfast was sensational, So yummy. The decor throughout the property was amazing, You actually thought you were back in time but with all the modern cons included.

What could be improved: Probably that i had to leave to go home.

  • Comfortable accommodation and pleasant helpful staff . – Robyn from Australia – 16 June 2025 (8/10)

The location and atmosphere of a little part of the history of Sydney

What could be improved: Nothing to dislike.

  • A room with a view – Bec from Australia – 14 June 2025 (10/10)

The location is great, 5-10minute walk from Circular Quay Station and ferries. It is close to the Opera house.

The staff are friendly and very helpful.

The rooms are spacious and have everything you need. The views from the room and the roof are spectacular.

What could be improved: There was nothing i didn't like.

  • One of Sydney’s hidden gems in an outstanding ding location. – Robin from Australia – 13 June 2025 (9/10)

Old world charm in an unbeatable location with staff who did everything to make our stay enjoyable. The manager Val deserves a special mention. The hotel is newly refurbished and the room was quiet and spacious and the beds very comfortable. Bar and Bistro on site with good pub food including breakfast. Plenty of other eating options close by.

What could be improved: Not enough power points in the room. The bathroom set up was awkward with shower over bath which was slippery but not all rooms are like this. Vehicle access can be difficult for those with disability.

  • Fantastic – Gavan from Australia – 10 June 2025 (10/10)

    Location is perfect

  • Awesome place to stay – David from Australia – 10 June 2025 (9/10)

    Location is fantastic
