The hotel itself has this really cool industrial-chic thing going on – exposed brick, steel fixtures, but done in a way that feels warm rather than cold. They’ve nailed that balance between honoring the neighborhood’s edgy vibe while still being, you know, actually comfortable.

What really got me was how they’ve thought about the practical stuff that matters when you’re staying somewhere. The rooms are surprisingly quiet considering you’re right on one of Sydney’s busiest strips – I’m guessing they invested in some serious soundproofing because I could barely hear the late-night crowd stumbling past. The bathrooms are actually spacious (rare for Sydney hotels, let’s be real), and they’ve got these rainfall showers that are honestly better than what I have at home. Check-in was smooth, and the staff clearly know the area – they pointed me toward Guzman y Gomez for late-night food and mentioned that Saturday mornings can get pretty hectic with the markets just down the street. Little details like that make a difference.

Here’s the thing about staying at The Newtowner – you’re not just getting a bed for the night, you’re getting dropped right into one of Sydney’s most interesting neighborhoods. Sure, it can get a bit lively on weekend nights (this is Newtown, after all), but that’s part of the charm. You’ll wake up to the smell of coffee from the dozens of cafes lining the street, and you can walk to places like Camperdown Cemetery or Sydney Park without needing to figure out public transport. The hotel’s got this rooftop area that overlooks the chaos below, which is perfect for a morning coffee or evening drink – you feel like you’re part of the scene but with a comfortable retreat to escape to.   What could be improved: Many places these days put a naked doona on the bed, and this one was among them. We feel better if there is a cover on the doona, that we know has been washed between guests. Otherwise, everything was perfect
