So I stumbled across The Lurline Randwick during one of those frantic Sydney accommodation searches, and honestly? Best accidental find in ages. This place sits right on Avoca Street – you know, that strip where half the buildings look like they’re straight out of the 1920s – and the Lurline totally fits that old-school Sydney vibe. It’s got this beautiful heritage facade that makes you do a double-take when you’re walking past, but inside they’ve done this really thoughtful renovation that doesn’t try too hard to be trendy.
What I love about staying here is that you’re actually in Randwick, not some touristy bubble. The Royal Hospital’s literally around the corner (which sounds weird but it’s actually reassuring), and you’re a decent walk to Coogee Beach – maybe 15 minutes if you don’t mind a bit of a stroll down the hill. The rooms have this comfortable, lived-in quality without being shabby, if that makes sense. Mine had these lovely high ceilings and big windows that let in heaps of natural light, though I’d maybe request a room facing away from Avoca Street if you’re a light sleeper – there’s a bit of traffic noise in the mornings when people are heading to work.
The staff here actually seem to know the area, which is refreshing. When I asked about good coffee nearby, the guy at reception didn’t just point me to the closest chain – he sent me to this little place two blocks down that does proper flat whites. And parking… well, it’s Sydney, so it’s always going to be a bit of a thing, but they’ve got spaces out back and the staff are pretty flexible about letting you move your car around if needed. Check-in was smooth too, none of that “your room isn’t ready until exactly 3 PM” nonsense – they had me sorted by lunchtime. The whole place has this relaxed, neighborhood pub kind of feeling (which makes sense given the name), and there’s something genuinely welcoming about it that you don’t always get at the flashier places closer to the CBD. You’re paying for location and character here rather than marble bathrooms and turndown service, but honestly, that’s exactly what makes it work.
Guests are required to show a photo ID and credit card at check-in.
