You know what? I wasn’t expecting much when I first walked into The Henderson, but this place actually gets it right. It’s tucked away in the heart of Sydney in a way that feels like you’ve discovered something rather than just booked another generic hotel room. The lobby has this warm, lived-in elegance – think rich leather chairs that actually look comfortable enough to sink into with a book, not just pose in for Instagram.

The whole “classic inner city oasis” thing isn’t just marketing speak here. I mean, you’re definitely in the middle of everything – I could hear the gentle hum of city life from my room, but it was more like a pleasant urban soundtrack than actual noise. The rooms themselves have character without trying too hard, if that makes sense. Mine had these gorgeous high ceilings and windows that actually opened (honestly, when did that become a luxury?), and the bed was one of those where you immediately think “okay, I could get used to this.” The bathroom was properly spacious too, with one of those rainfall showerheads that actually has decent water pressure – small victories, right?

What really sold me on this place was the staff’s genuine knowledge of the area. The concierge didn’t just hand me a tourist brochure; she actually told me which direction to walk to hit the good coffee spots before the morning rush, and mentioned that Thursday evenings tend to be quieter at the nearby galleries. It’s those kinds of insider details that make you feel like you’re experiencing Sydney rather than just visiting it. The location works brilliantly because you can walk to most of what you’d want to see, but you’re also on a street that feels more residential than touristy – there’s something satisfying about stepping out and seeing locals heading to work or walking their dogs. Parking was surprisingly straightforward too, which anyone who’s driven in Sydney will appreciate. I’d definitely stay here again, especially if I wanted to feel connected to the city without being overwhelmed by it.
