So I stumbled across The Fern during my third trip to Sydney, and honestly? It’s one of those places that catches you off guard in the best way. You walk in expecting another cookie-cutter hotel, but then there’s this gorgeous split-level design that actually makes sense – not just fancy for the sake of it. The courtyard is what really got me though. I mean, Sydney’s got plenty of hotels, but finding one where you can actually sit outside without traffic noise drowning out your morning coffee? That’s something special.
The eco-luxury thing isn’t just marketing speak either, which was refreshing. They’ve got this whole rainwater collection system you can see working if you’re into that sort of thing, and the courtyard is packed with native plants that actually attract birds – I watched these rainbow lorikeets having breakfast from my window one morning. The split-level rooms are clever too; you get this separation between sleeping and living areas that makes the space feel way bigger than it probably is. Fair warning though – if you’re not great with stairs, maybe mention that when booking because those levels can be a bit much after a long day walking around Circular Quay.
Location-wise, you’re close enough to everything that matters without being right in the chaos. The staff seemed to know their stuff about getting around – they pointed me toward this little laneway cafe that I never would’ve found otherwise, and gave me the real story about which ferry routes to avoid during peak hours. Check-in was smooth, parking was actually available (miracle in Sydney), and the whole vibe just felt more… authentic, I guess? Like someone put thought into creating a space rather than just filling rooms with generic furniture. The 7.4 rating feels about right – it’s got character and does the important stuff well, but it’s not trying to be the flashiest place in town. Sometimes that’s exactly what you want.
