Look, I’ve stayed at plenty of places in Sydney, but The Earl in Potts Point just gets it right in a way that’s hard to explain. You know how some hotels try too hard to be trendy? This one actually is trendy, but it feels effortless – like it’s been part of the neighborhood forever, even though it’s clearly been given some serious love recently.
The thing about Potts Point is that it’s this perfect sweet spot between the tourist chaos of Circular Quay and the pretentious energy of Double Bay. You’re literally a five-minute walk from Kings Cross station, which I know sounds sketchy if you’re not familiar with Sydney, but honestly the area’s cleaned up so much over the years. The Earl sits right in the heart of it all on Macleay Street – you can grab amazing coffee at Piccolo Me around the corner (seriously, don’t skip this), and there’s this little laneway with some incredible hole-in-the-wall restaurants that most tourists never find. What really sold me though was stepping into my room and seeing those harbor glimpses through the windows. I mean, you’re not getting Opera House views or anything, but there’s something about catching those little slivers of blue water between the buildings that just makes you feel like you’re really in Sydney.
The rooms themselves are what I’d call “boutique done right” – they’ve got character without being weird about it. The beds are actually comfortable (you’d be surprised how many trendy places forget about this basic requirement), and the bathrooms have decent water pressure, which honestly matters more than whatever fancy toiletries they stock. I stayed during a pretty busy weekend in March and never had issues with noise, even though Potts Point can get lively on Friday nights. The staff at check-in seemed to actually know the neighborhood well – they pointed me toward this little wine bar called Maybe Sammy that I never would have found otherwise. One small thing that bugged me was the air conditioning took forever to cool down the room, but once it got going it was fine. The whole place has this relaxed, lived-in vibe that makes you want to hang out in the lobby with a book, and I saw plenty of people doing exactly that. If you’re the type who wants to feel like a local rather than a tourist, and you don’t need to be right on the harbor throwing money around, The Earl is pretty much perfect. Plus, you can walk to the Royal Botanic Gardens in about fifteen minutes, which is something I wish more people knew about this area.
Guests are required to show a photo ID and credit card at check-in.
