You know what? I wasn’t expecting much when I first pulled up to the Tempe Hotel Sydney on Princes Highway – I mean, it’s right there on the main drag, and honestly, three-star places can be hit or miss. But this one actually surprised me in the best way possible. The moment I walked into the lobby, there was this unexpectedly warm, almost homey vibe that you don’t usually get at roadside hotels. The staff at check-in were genuinely friendly (not that forced hospitality thing), and I could tell they actually knew the area well when I asked about getting into the city.

The location is what really makes this place work, though. Sure, you’re on Princes Highway, which means there’s some traffic noise – but honestly, it dies down after about 10 PM, and the trade-off is worth it. You’re literally five minutes from Tempe Station, which gets you into Central Sydney in about fifteen minutes. I actually ended up walking to the station most mornings because the neighborhood has this nice, lived-in feel with decent coffee shops along the way. And here’s something the booking sites don’t tell you – there’s a Woolworths practically next door, which saved me a fortune on bottled water and snacks. The rooms themselves are clean and comfortable, nothing fancy but everything works properly. The beds are actually pretty good (I’m picky about mattresses), and the air conditioning is quiet, which matters when you’re trying to sleep off jet lag.

What really sealed the deal for me was the little things – like how they have proper hangers in the closets, not those annoying attached ones, and the shower has decent water pressure. The WiFi is solid throughout the building, which I needed for work calls back home. I stayed during peak season in February, and while the place was busy, it never felt chaotic or understaffed. The breakfast isn’t elaborate, but it’s fresh and filling, and they make a proper flat white. I mean, you’re in Sydney – the coffee better be good, right? Look, if you want harbor views and marble bathrooms, this isn’t your spot. But if you need a reliable, comfortable base that won’t blow your budget and actually connects you to the city properly, the Tempe Hotel gets it right. I’d definitely stay here again, especially knowing now how easy it is to get around from there.

  Arrived at the hotel to a lovely welcoming lady who checked us in really swiftly and explained everything we needed to know. Highlighted the safety of the building overnight as it’s also a pub, the daily deals in the pub restaurant and also ensured us that they were on hand if we needed them. The room was bright and airy with lovely high ceilings and a SUPER comfy bed. We selected a room with a shared bathroom and wow, the shared bathrooms are incredible! It felt like having a shower in a show home they were that clean and modern. After checking in we had dinner downstairs, the day kept getting better! It was a Monday so there was a deal on rump steaks where they only cost $20.. these did not disappoint! Such great value and oh so delicious. Followed by a chocolate brownie which easily sits at the top of our all time favourite brownies, hats off to the chefs.

  The whole staff were welcoming from first arrival carrying 2 x heavy luggage bags up stairs to our room. The manager was very friendly talking to us, listening to our thoughts and also holding our bags the morning of departure while we had breakfast at a local cafe. Our bags were then taken by the manager (a lady) to the Uber awaiting us. Credit must go to the people behind this rebuilt of what was a very run-down old pub, bringing it back to its former glory with modern conveniences such as ensuite in 80% of the rooms. A memorable stay in a thriving area of inner Sydney.

  The Tempe Hotel far exceeded our expectations.
  A stopover for our trip to the UK its location was excellent.
  When arriving the staff were so friendly and welcoming it was so very refreshing.
  The balcony room we stayed in had a great comfy bed and was super clean.
  Happy hour in the bar and the specials on the menu board meant you certainly have bang for your buck.
  We stayed, ate and drank at the Tempe and would do it again in a heartbeat.
  When and should you stay at the Tempe there is a wonderful cafe just down the street called CAFE DZAJKO
  that you must go for breakfast, the lovely Macedonian family would appreciate your business.
