Look, I’ll be honest – when I first pulled up to 23 Cheltenham Road, I wasn’t expecting much from what looked like a pretty standard suburban street in Croydon. But you know what? This three-bedroom townhouse completely changed my mind about staying in residential areas instead of those cookie-cutter hotel districts.

The place actually feels like a proper home, which sounds obvious but trust me, most vacation rentals don’t pull this off. The moment you walk in, there’s this lived-in comfort that makes you want to kick off your shoes and settle in for more than just a night or two. The kitchen – and this is coming from someone who usually survives on takeout while traveling – actually made me want to cook. It’s got everything you’d need, plus the kind of little touches that show someone really thought about how people live day-to-day. I mean, there are proper coffee cups, not those tiny hotel ones that make you feel like you’re playing house.

What really sold me on this spot though is the location, and I don’t mean that in the generic “convenient location” way everyone says. Croydon gets overlooked by most tourists, but honestly, that’s part of its charm. You’re about twenty minutes from the CBD by train (the station’s an easy walk), but you’re also right in the middle of real Sydney life. There’s this fantastic Vietnamese bakery just around the corner on The Strand – I probably went there three times in two days for their pork rolls. The neighborhood has that perfect mix of quiet residential streets where you can actually sleep at night, but with enough local shops and cafes that you don’t feel cut off from everything.

The townhouse itself sleeps six comfortably, and I stayed with a group of friends who can be… well, let’s say particular about their space. Everyone had room to spread out, which kept the peace. The bedrooms are actually separate enough that early risers didn’t wake up the night owls, always a plus. Parking was straightforward too – none of that circling-the-block nightmare you get in the inner suburbs.

I’ll level with you about one thing though: if you’re the type who wants to stumble back to your room after a big night out in the city, this probably isn’t your spot. You’ll need to plan your transport, especially late at night. But honestly, we found ourselves hanging out in the area more than we expected anyway. There’s something refreshing about experiencing Sydney from a neighborhood perspective rather than the tourist bubble.

The whole experience felt more like staying at a friend’s place than a typical accommodation, which is exactly what you want when you’re traveling with a group or staying for more than a few days. It’s got that four-star comfort level without the four-star attitude, if you know what I mean.
