So I’ve stayed at Stay and Sea! a few times now, and honestly? It’s one of those places that grows on you. The name’s a bit cheesy, sure, but they’re not wrong about the sea part – you’re literally a two-minute walk from Ramsgate Beach, which most tourists completely miss because they’re all crowded around Bondi and Coogee. The hotel sits right on Ramsgate Road, and I mean, it’s not the prettiest street you’ll ever see, but there’s something refreshingly real about it. You’ve got your local fish and chips shop next door (decent batter, actually), and the train station is close enough that you can hear the occasional rumble – not loud enough to keep you awake, just enough to remind you that you’re in a proper neighborhood.
The rooms are… well, they’re three-star rooms. Clean, functional, nothing fancy. But you know what I appreciate? The staff actually remembers your name after the first night, and they’ll give you proper directions to places instead of just handing you a tourist map. The guy at reception – I think his name’s Mike – told me about this little coffee cart that sets up near the beach in the mornings, and honestly, best flat white I had in Sydney. The beds are comfortable enough, though the pillows are a bit soft for my liking. There’s air conditioning that actually works (crucial during those sticky February nights), and the shower pressure is surprisingly good. I mean, you’re not getting marble bathrooms or anything, but everything does what it’s supposed to do.
What really sells me on this place is the location, though. Ramsgate Beach is this lovely little stretch of sand that feels like a secret – families from the area bring their kids here because it’s calmer than the famous beaches. You can walk along the water to Brighton-Le-Sands, grab some Lebanese food (the area’s full of amazing Middle Eastern restaurants), and feel like you’re experiencing actual Sydney rather than tourist Sydney. The airport’s close enough that you’ll see planes overhead, but it’s not constant, and honestly, I kind of like watching them. Getting into the city is easy – just hop on the train, and you’re in Central Station in about 20 minutes. Parking’s free, which is basically a miracle in Sydney, and there’s a Woolworths about five minutes away if you need supplies.
Look, Stay and Sea! isn’t going to win any design awards, and it’s not the kind of place you’d book for a romantic anniversary. But if you want somewhere comfortable and unpretentious, with genuine local flavor and easy access to both the beach and the city, it’s actually a pretty smart choice. Plus, you’ll save enough money to spend on decent dinners instead of overpriced hotel room service.
You need to let the property know what time you'll be arriving in advance.
