When I first pulled up to the Starlight in Bexley, I honestly wasn’t sure what to expect from a place calling itself “A Slice of the Hollywood Hills.” I mean, we’re talking about Sydney’s inner west here, not exactly Beverly Hills territory. But walking into that lobby – there’s this whole vintage Hollywood thing going on that actually works really well. The lighting is moody in the best way, and they’ve got these old film posters mixed with modern Australian art that somehow doesn’t feel forced.

The location is pretty clever, actually. Bexley’s one of those suburbs that’s close enough to everything without being right in the chaos – you’re about twenty minutes to the CBD by train, and Rockdale station is just a short walk away. What I really loved is how quiet it gets at night compared to staying in the city center. You can actually open your windows without hearing sirens every ten minutes. The rooms themselves have this interesting mix of old Hollywood glamour and Sydney beach house vibes – think dark wood furniture with pops of that bright Australian coastal blue. The beds are honestly fantastic (I’m picky about this), and the bathrooms have these rainfall showerheads that make you want to stay in there forever.

Here’s what really sold me on the place though – the staff genuinely seem to know the area. When I asked about good coffee nearby, they didn’t just point me to some chain place but sent me to this little spot on Forest Road that does the best flat whites I’ve had outside of Melbourne (don’t tell my Sydney friends I said that). The hotel itself has this relaxed energy that feels authentically Australian rather than trying too hard to be something it’s not. Sure, it’s not going to blow you away with over-the-top luxury – it’s a solid 4-star that knows exactly what it is. The pool area is smaller than the photos make it look, and the gym is pretty basic, but honestly? Most people aren’t coming to Bexley to spend all day at the hotel anyway. Check-in was smooth, parking is included (which is actually a big deal in Sydney), and they’ve got this nice little cocktail bar that gets busy with locals on weekends – always a good sign. For the price point and that 8.5 rating, the Starlight delivers exactly what you’d hope for: a comfortable, well-located base with enough character to make your stay memorable without breaking the bank.

  The size and spaciousness of the property was very good. Location a bit out of the way but suited us specifically for family reasons.
  
  What could be improved: The kitchen was poorly equipped contrary to the description, and other amenities were not consistent with the standard expected from the description. Cleaning and cleanliness was poor in some areas. Premium price with some budget amenities.
