Look, I’ll be honest – when I first pulled up to the Southern Cross Hotel on Princes Highway, I wasn’t expecting much from a 3-star place. But you know what? This little gem actually surprised me in all the right ways. The building itself has this classic Sydney hotel vibe – nothing flashy, but solid and welcoming. What really caught my attention was how the staff seemed to actually care about what they were doing, which honestly isn’t something you see everywhere these days.

The location is where this place really shines, though they don’t make a big deal about it. You’re literally a stone’s throw from Wolli Creek station, which means you can be in the CBD in about 20 minutes without dealing with Sydney’s notorious traffic. I mean, staying right on Princes Highway might sound like a noise nightmare, but the rooms are surprisingly quiet – they’ve clearly invested in decent windows. The neighborhood has this interesting mix of local cafes and businesses that feel genuinely Australian, not touristy at all. There’s a fantastic little Vietnamese place just down the road that the front desk guy recommended (and he was absolutely right about their pho).

What I appreciated most was how the hotel feels… well, lived-in but not worn down, if that makes sense. The rooms are clean and functional – nothing Instagram-worthy, but everything works properly. The shower pressure is actually decent, which is more than I can say for some pricier places I’ve stayed. The Wi-Fi doesn’t cut out every five minutes, and there’s enough space to spread out your stuff without feeling cramped. Honestly, for the price point, you’re getting solid value without any nasty surprises. The 8.1 rating makes perfect sense once you stay there – it’s not trying to be something it’s not, but it does what it promises really well. If you’re looking for a reliable base to explore Sydney without breaking the bank, especially if you’re planning to use public transport, this place deserves serious consideration.

  Lovely hotel, had everything we needed. Really easy to get into the city as well, just a short walk to the train station so great location. Also has a good sized free car park which was super handy! Good value for money & would stay again.
  
  What could be improved: It is a tad noisy with the planes flying over & we had some loud neighbours which we could hear a bit through the wall – didn’t bother us much at all but if you’re sensitive to noise maybe take earplugs!

  I had the basic double room perfect size for a solo traveller, but could easily accommodate 2 people if u dont mind living in close quarters. The bed was super comfy and the room was clean. It had everything you need almost. Staff were super friendly and helpful and there were plenty of parking spots available. Could barely hear any street noise even though its right on a main road. Shower had good water pressure and toiletries provided. Close to amenities bars and cafes.
  
  What could be improved: it would have been nice to have a small fridge without having to upgrade. And housekeeping woke me up before check out time.
