So I’ve stayed at the Southend Hotel a few times now, and honestly, it’s one of those places that just gets better the more you understand Maroubra. The thing is, most people rush straight to Bondi or Coogee and completely miss this stretch of coastline – which is actually perfect if you want proper beach vibes without the circus.

The hotel itself sits on Curtin Crescent, which sounds fancy but it’s really just a quiet residential street about a seven-minute walk from Maroubra Beach. You know what I love about this spot? You can hear the ocean from some of the rooms, especially at night when the traffic dies down, but you’re not dealing with the constant parade of tourists dragging wheelie bags over cobblestones at 6am. The building’s got that classic Australian coastal hotel feel – nothing too flash, but clean and comfortable with staff who actually seem to enjoy their jobs. Check-in was smooth both times I’ve been there, and they’re pretty flexible about early arrivals if you’re coming off a long flight.

The rooms are what you’d expect from a solid three-star place – decent beds, proper hot showers, and air conditioning that actually works (crucial in Sydney summers, trust me). I mean, it’s not going to win any design awards, but there’s something refreshing about a hotel that focuses on doing the basics really well rather than cramming in gimmicky features. The 8.3 rating makes total sense when you consider the value – you’re paying way less than you would for similar quality closer to the city center, and Maroubra’s got this amazing local scene that most visitors never discover. There’s Bodhi Bar just down the street for excellent Thai food, and the Maroubra Seals Club if you want to drink with actual locals instead of other tourists.

What really sold me on this area, though, is the beach itself. Maroubra’s got proper surf breaks, rock pools for exploring, and this incredible coastal walk that connects all the way down to Coogee – though honestly, once you’ve spent a morning at Maroubra Beach, you might not bother continuing on. The hotel’s position means you can easily walk to the beach for sunrise (which is spectacular, by the way) or duck back for a quick shower and nap between beach sessions. Parking’s not too brutal either, which anyone who’s tried to drive around Bondi on a weekend will appreciate. The only minor thing I’d mention is that some of the street-facing rooms can get a bit of traffic noise during morning rush hour, but it’s nothing a decent pair of earplugs can’t handle. Overall, if you want to experience Sydney’s beach culture without the tourist markup and crowds, this place delivers exactly what it promises.

  Proximity to family, beach & Supermarket. Great Pub and food underneath. Nice and quiet, roomy & comfortable & clean.

  The rooms were clean,comfortable although a little dated. The price for the overnight stay was exceptional. The hotel although not in the main centre of Maroubra, is only a short walk down to the beach and town centre.
