Sheraton Grand Sydney Hyde Park
I’ll be honest – when I first walked into the Sheraton Grand Sydney Hyde Park, I wasn’t expecting to be that impressed. I mean, it’s a chain hotel, right? But this place actually surprised me. The lobby has this grand, old-school elegance that feels genuinely Australian rather than cookie-cutter international. There’s marble everywhere, but not in an overwhelming way, and the staff genuinely seemed to know what they were doing during check-in (which, let’s face it, isn’t always a given these days).
What really got me was the location – and I don’t mean that in the generic “convenient location” way everyone talks about. You’re literally across from Hyde Park, which means you can actually see green from your room if you get the right side. But here’s what the booking sites don’t tell you: you’re also a two-minute walk from Museum Station, which is clutch if you’re planning to explore beyond the CBD. I spent most mornings grabbing coffee from the little place on the corner of Park Street (honestly better than the hotel coffee) and cutting through the park to get to Circular Quay. The whole area gets pretty quiet after business hours, which some people love and others might find a bit dead – depends what you’re after, I guess.
The rooms themselves are… well, they’re what you’d expect from a 5-star Sheraton, but with some nice touches. The beds are genuinely comfortable (I’m picky about this), and the bathrooms are larger than most Sydney hotels manage to squeeze in. You know what I appreciated? The blackout curtains actually work. I’ve stayed in too many places where the “blackout” curtains let in half the city’s light pollution. The air conditioning runs quietly too, which matters when you’re trying to sleep and there’s still traffic noise from Elizabeth Street – though honestly, by the third floor up, you barely notice it. One small thing that bugged me was the Wi-Fi being a bit spotty in the evenings when everyone’s streaming, but that’s pretty standard for hotels these days. The concierge team actually knows the city well (asked them about getting to some less obvious spots in Newtown and they had solid recommendations), and housekeeping was consistently good throughout my stay. It’s the kind of place where you can tell they’re trying to maintain actual standards rather than just going through the motions.
