Hotel Description

You know what struck me first about the Savoy Double Bay? It’s actually got character – and I mean that in the best way. This isn’t one of those cookie-cutter places where every hotel could be anywhere in the world. The moment you walk into the lobby, there’s this sort of old-school Sydney charm mixed with enough modern touches that you don’t feel like you’re staying in your grandmother’s house. The staff at check-in were genuinely helpful too, not just going through the motions, which honestly makes such a difference when you’re tired from traveling.

The location is what really makes this place shine, though. You’re right in the heart of Double Bay – and if you know Sydney, you know that means you’re in one of the eastern suburbs’ sweet spots. Knox Street puts you walking distance from all those boutique shops along Bay Street, plus you can actually stroll to the waterfront without breaking a sweat. The Cross Street markets are just around the corner on Saturdays, and there’s this little coffee spot (I think it’s called Barrel & Co) about two blocks away that does the best flat whites. What I really appreciated was how quiet it stays at night – Double Bay has this reputation for being posh, but it’s not party central, so you can actually sleep.

The rooms themselves are solid for a 3.5-star spot. I mean, you’re not getting harbour views or marble bathrooms, but everything works properly and the beds are comfortable enough that I didn’t wake up with a sore back. The air conditioning was a godsend during that hot spell in February – it actually cools the room down, which isn’t always a given in older Sydney hotels. Parking can be a bit tricky (street parking is mostly metered during the day), but there are a couple of public lots nearby if you’re driving. The WiFi was reliable, which matters more than people admit when you’re trying to figure out your plans or catch up on work. Look, it’s not going to wow you with luxury, but it does exactly what a good neighborhood hotel should do – gives you a comfortable base in a great area without charging harbour-view prices. If you want to experience Double Bay properly without the Shangri-La price tag, this is honestly a smart choice.

Reviews

  • Great hotel, but avoid room 104! – Katie from Australia – 3 June 2025 (6/10)

    Great location

What could be improved: We stay here often and usually love it, however the room we were given was terrible. Dark, cramped, not private with an extra double bed that we did not need. The other “superior” rooms we are usually in are much better.

  • Fit for purpose – Peter from New Zealand – 29 May 2025 (7/10)

    Location and friendly staff

What could be improved: Should not store towels and bedding and dryer and bedding in the hallways and staircases

  • Mixed stay – Mike from United Kingdom – 13 April 2025 (6/10)

No receptionist in sight but after 15 mins they appeared looking very wet having repaired a water leak. Room was fine clean and reasonably appointed but air con leaked onto bed so had the shut it off
Two days later my son had the same room and the air con wouldn’t work. They swapped him to a triple room that was good.

  • Apart from apparent petty theft of my toiletries, was ok. – Robert from Australia – 20 March 2025 (7/10)

    Location. Price.

What could be improved: Some personal toiletries went missing from my room. No responsibility or concern by management.

  • Very good – Mark from Australia – 18 March 2025 (8/10)

    Location

What could be improved: Little untidy

  • Good value for money – Brett from Australia – 26 February 2025 (8/10)

    The location is great

What could be improved: Bed was not that comfortable

  • Hidden gem! – Anne from Australia – 21 February 2025 (7/10)

    Location!

    The room was very neat.

What could be improved: The ensuite would benefit from an upgrade.
The tea (Bushels) and coffee (Nescafé) could step up. “Milk” options ought to include alternatives to cows milk.

  • Lovely old hotel now taken over for redevelopment into flats. – Vaughn from France – 20 February 2025 (6/10)

    Lflats.

  • Nice stay – Shu from Australia – 17 February 2025 (8/10)

They upgraded our room which is very nice of them. The reception is very professional and efficient.

What could be improved: A little bit far away from the metro station.

  • The filosofy project at the motels back door has coffee and juice that was a first stop before a short stroll to the bea – Nicole from Australia – 18 January 2025 (8/10)

The location was good the staff very helpful and friendly loved that

What could be improved: Our shower screen was broken and not replaced so found the floor in the bathroom got very wet but wasn’t a reason I wouldn’t stay again
