You know what struck me first about the Royal Hotel Randwick? It’s got this genuinely welcoming pub vibe that makes you feel like you’ve stumbled into someone’s well-loved local spot rather than just another hotel. The building sits right on Perouse Road – and honestly, the location couldn’t be much better if you’re trying to get around this part of Sydney. I mean, you’re literally a five-minute walk from the Royal Randwick Racecourse (perfect if you’re into the races), and the buses that’ll take you straight into the city center stop practically at the front door.

The rooms are what you’d expect from a solid three-star place – clean, comfortable beds that actually let you sleep properly, and everything works like it should. Nothing fancy, but there’s something refreshing about a place that doesn’t try to be more than it is. The staff behind the bar downstairs actually know the neighborhood inside and out, which is pretty rare these days. They’ll tell you the best way to get to Coogee Beach (it’s closer than you think) or where to grab decent coffee that won’t cost you fifteen bucks. The pub gets a bit lively on Friday nights – just so you know if you’re planning to turn in early – but it’s more cheerful locals than rowdy tourists, which I actually found kind of charming.

What really won me over was how the place feels connected to the area rather than dropped into it. You’ve got the University of New South Wales campus just up the road, so there’s this nice energy around without being overwhelmed by college chaos. The nearby shops along Belmore Road are the kind where people actually live and work, not just tourist traps. Parking can be a bit tricky during race days (obviously), but most of the time you’ll find a spot without circling the block forever. The 8.5 rating makes perfect sense to me – it’s not trying to be the Ritz, but it delivers exactly what it promises with a genuine warmth that’s harder to find than you’d think. If you want to stay somewhere that feels like part of Sydney rather than just a place to crash between tourist activities, this is your spot.
