You know what? I wasn’t expecting much when I first pulled up to Mort Lane – I mean, it’s literally tucked away in this quiet residential pocket that most tourists never stumble across. But honestly, that’s exactly what makes the Rear Garden Suite so special. It’s like finding this hidden gem that the locals have been keeping to themselves, just a stone’s throw from all the Darling Harbour action but without any of that touristy chaos.
The suite itself is actually bigger than the photos suggest (which never happens, right?). When you walk in, there’s this immediate sense of calm that hits you – maybe it’s the way the afternoon light filters through those floor-to-ceiling windows, or how you can actually hear birds chirping instead of traffic. The garden view is the real star here, and I mean a proper garden, not some sad courtyard with a few potted plants. During spring – which is when you absolutely want to book this place – the whole space comes alive with native plantings that attract these gorgeous rainbow lorikeets. I spent way too many mornings just sitting out there with my coffee, watching them go about their business.
What really sold me though was the attention to detail that you don’t get in your typical hotel. The kitchenette is actually functional (shocking, I know), stocked with proper appliances and local coffee beans from a roastery in Surry Hills. The bathroom has this rainfall shower that I’m still dreaming about, and the bed – well, let’s just say checkout was genuinely difficult. Location-wise, you’re about a 12-minute walk to Darling Harbour if you take the scenic route through the park, or there’s a bus stop right around the corner that connects you to Central Station. Parking was surprisingly easy too, which anyone who’s driven in Sydney will tell you is basically a miracle. The whole experience felt more like staying at a friend’s really well-appointed apartment than a hotel, and given that 8.5 rating from other guests, I’m clearly not the only one who thinks so. Just don’t tell too many people about it – places like this have a way of getting discovered and losing their charm.
You need to let the property know what time you'll be arriving in advance.
