Look, I’ve stayed in plenty of places around Sydney, but this little gem on a quiet Newtown terrace actually surprised me. The Newtown Nest sits on one of those classic tree-lined streets just off King Street – close enough that you can hear the late-night energy if you really listen, but far enough back that you’ll sleep peacefully. The building itself is this beautifully restored Victorian terrace that someone clearly put serious thought into. I mean, they’ve kept all the original character (those gorgeous high ceilings, the original floorboards that creak in just the right way) while adding these really smart modern touches that don’t feel forced.
What really sold me was the terrace setup they’ve got going – there’s this incredible rooftop space where you can actually see across to the city skyline, and honestly, it’s where I ended up spending most of my mornings with coffee. The rooms themselves feel more like a stylish friend’s apartment than a hotel. The furniture’s that perfect mix of vintage finds and contemporary pieces, and there’s proper storage space (you know how rare that is in inner Sydney). The kitchen area is small but functional – I actually cooked a few meals there, which says something because hotel kitchens usually drive me crazy. One thing though – the shower pressure is phenomenal, but the hot water takes a minute to kick in, so just… give it a second.
The location is honestly what makes this place special. You’re literally a three-minute walk from King Street, which means you’ve got everything from late-night dumplings at Golden Lotus to proper coffee at Campos right at your doorstep. The whole strip comes alive differently throughout the day – morning dog walkers and café crowds, afternoon vintage shopping, then the evening restaurant scene. I loved being able to duck back to the terrace when the street got too hectic. Parking was easier than I expected too; there’s decent street parking during the day, and the hosts actually gave me solid local tips about where to leave the car overnight. The staff (well, I mostly dealt with Sarah who manages the place) were genuinely helpful without being hovering – she pointed me toward this incredible Vietnamese place on Enmore Road that I never would’ve found otherwise. This isn’t your typical hotel experience, and that’s exactly why it works so well.
