You know what struck me first about Neutral Bay Lodge? It’s one of those places that doesn’t try to be something it’s not – and honestly, that’s refreshing. Tucked away on Kurraba Road, it feels like you’ve found this quiet pocket of Sydney that most tourists completely miss. I mean, you’re literally a five-minute walk from the Neutral Bay wharf where you can catch a ferry straight to Circular Quay, but the street itself is surprisingly peaceful. The building has that classic Australian character – nothing fancy, but solid and welcoming in a way that makes you feel like you’re staying somewhere real rather than some sterile hotel bubble.

The rooms are exactly what you’d expect from a good 3-star spot, though I was pleasantly surprised by how much natural light they get. The windows actually open (thank god), and if you’re lucky enough to snag one of the harbor-view rooms, well… let’s just say watching the ferries chug back and forth while you’re having your morning coffee is pretty magical. The beds are comfortable enough – I slept well, which is saying something because I’m usually terrible at sleeping in new places. What I really appreciated were the little touches that show someone actually thinks about what travelers need: decent power outlets near the bed, a kettle that works properly, and shower pressure that doesn’t make you want to cry. The WiFi is solid too, which matters if you’re trying to work or just stay connected.

Location-wise, this place is honestly perfect if you want to feel like you’re living in Sydney rather than just visiting it. Military Road is right there with all the cafes and shops locals actually use – there’s this brilliant little bakery about two blocks down that does the best meat pies I’ve had outside of Melbourne. The Oaks Hotel is practically next door if you want a proper pub meal, and the whole Neutral Bay area has this lovely residential vibe where you’ll see people walking their dogs and kids riding bikes. Sure, it’s not Bondi or The Rocks, but that’s exactly why it works. You can be at the Opera House in 20 minutes by ferry (and trust me, that harbor crossing never gets old), or walk across the Harbour Bridge if you’re feeling energetic. Parking can be a bit tricky on the street, but the hotel sorts that out reasonably well. I’d definitely stay here again – it’s got that sweet spot of being genuinely comfortable without breaking the bank, and the staff actually seem to care about whether you’re having a good time. Sometimes that’s worth more than all the fancy amenities in the world.

  Great value for money. Beds were comfy, serviced every day (which I wasn’t expecting), great to have a fridge and kettle in the room, kitchen area clean with all you need to cook a meal. Staff are lovely. Short walk to the ferry to get into the city.
