Napoleon On Kent
So I’ve stayed at Napoleon On Kent a few times now, and honestly, it’s one of those places that grows on you. The first thing you notice walking in is how they’ve managed to squeeze quite a bit of character into what could have been just another CBD hotel block. The lobby has this sort of understated elegance – not trying too hard, but definitely not budget either. You know what I mean? It sits right on Kent Street, which is actually perfect if you’re someone who likes to walk everywhere. I mean, you’re literally a two-minute stroll from Wynyard Station, and Town Hall is maybe five minutes if you’re not in a rush.
The rooms are what I’d call “properly sized” for Sydney standards – and trust me, that’s saying something in this city where hotel rooms can feel like expensive shoe boxes. The beds are genuinely comfortable (I’m picky about mattresses), and the bathrooms are modern without being sterile. What really impressed me was the soundproofing, actually. Kent Street can get pretty hectic during peak hours with all the buses and traffic, but once you’re inside, it’s surprisingly quiet. The staff seem to know their stuff too – they’re friendly without being overly chatty, and I’ve never had issues with check-in or getting extra towels or whatever. The cleaning is thorough, which honestly isn’t always a given even at four-star places these days.
Here’s what makes this place work for me: the location is absolutely spot-on for exploring Sydney properly. You’re walking distance to Circular Quay if you want to do the harbour thing, but you’re also close enough to George Street for shopping and restaurants. There’s a decent coffee place literally next door (crucial for morning people like me), and if you head toward Martin Place, you hit some really solid lunch spots that aren’t tourist traps. The hotel doesn’t have all the bells and whistles of the big chain places – no fancy spa or rooftop bar – but sometimes that’s exactly what you want. It’s comfortable, well-located, and the price point makes sense for what you’re getting. I’d say it’s ideal if you’re planning to spend most of your time out exploring rather than hanging around the hotel, but you still want somewhere nice to come back to at the end of the day. The 7.7 rating feels about right – it’s not going to blow your mind, but it’s solid and reliable, which in Sydney CBD is actually pretty valuable.
