Hotel Description

So I’ve stayed at Metro Apartments on Darling Harbour a few times now, and honestly, it’s become my go-to when I need something decent without breaking the bank in Sydney. The building sits right on Sussex Street – you know, that busy stretch that connects the CBD to the harbour – and while it’s not the fanciest spot you’ll find, there’s something refreshingly straightforward about the place that I actually appreciate.

The apartments themselves are proper self-contained units, which is brilliant if you’re staying more than a couple nights or just can’t face another hotel breakfast buffet. I mean, having a full kitchen means you can grab groceries from the Woolworths down the street (it’s literally a three-minute walk) and actually save some money in a city where a basic lunch can cost you $20. The furnishings are a bit dated – we’re talking early 2000s vibes – but everything works, and the beds are surprisingly comfortable. What really sold me on this place though is how quiet it gets at night, despite being on such a main road. The double glazing actually does its job, and once you’re tucked in, you wouldn’t know you’re in the middle of one of Australia’s busiest cities.

Location-wise, you’re genuinely spoiled here. Darling Harbour is right there – like, you can see the water from some of the higher floors – and it’s an easy stroll to Circular Quay if you want to catch a ferry or just watch the Opera House light up at sunset. The George Street light rail stops practically at your doorstep, which is perfect for getting to Central Station or out to the fish markets without dealing with Sydney’s… let’s call it “character-building” traffic. I’ve noticed the area gets pretty lively on weekends with all the harbour restaurants and bars, but in a good way – there’s always something happening if you want to step out, but it’s not obnoxiously loud. The staff at reception are genuinely helpful too, not just going through the motions. Last time I was there, the guy at the desk marked up a map with his personal restaurant recommendations, including this little Vietnamese place on Liverpool Street that I never would have found otherwise. For a 3.5-star place, that kind of local insight goes a long way.

Reviews

  • Overall my stay was good and staff were helpful and location was great – Zarita from Australia – 12 July 2025 (9/10)

The loft style room was great

What could be improved: Shower was abit small, and the aircon was unable to direct downstairs

  • Great views and comfortable, close proximity to shopping – Andronikos from Australia – 8 July 2025 (7/10)

The room was large enough for a family of four, and the kitchen facilities were good.

What could be improved: The spare blankets are not good; they are too thin and not warm. No heating downstairs. There was only about 10 minutes of hot water in the shower

  • Best location to enjoy both city and nature – Liz from India – 8 July 2025 (9/10)

Loved the nearness to city and nature

What could be improved: Loud noises from road

  • Very good – Ian from Australia – 22 June 2025 (8/10)

    Close to the harbour

  • Location, staff and facilities excellent for city stay – Liz from India – 21 June 2025 (9/10)

Location was excellent and having a full kitchen, fridge, washing machine and dryer in the apartment was really helpful. Staff was really nice especially Jeremy, Chris and all cleaning ladies. The small shop at the reception and convenience store nearby were also added attractions.

What could be improved: The only reason it missed the exceptional rating was due to few things
Sound from the roads downstairs. Maybe double glazed windows to make it sound proof might be good
Unavailability of a choice for residents to opt out of Corning everyday if preferred. Maybe a small button outside each room saying “needs cleaning”.
Wifi doesn’t reach upstairs. Needs some more boosting.

  • Great location. If you’re a light sleeper definitely pack ear plugs – Darcy from Australia – 12 May 2025 (9/10)

Location was amazing! Right in the city and 2 minute walk to darling harbour. Love the layout of the split level.

What could be improved: The street / club noise and traffic until about 2am/3am is extremely loud on the Friday and Saturday nights.. definitely needs some sound proofing

  • This place has it all to relax or enjoy all the sights … just bring some loops! – Ingrid from Australia – 5 May 2025 (9/10)

Location so close to Darling harbour, ferries etc. The river view is so beautiful.
the two stories made for a spacious feel
    Self contained with cooking facilities

What could be improved: Noise. Very loud hoon behaviour, so sudden bursts of very loud traffic noise

  • Superb – Samantha from Australia – 17 April 2025 (9/10)

Fantastic location for getting everywhere. Bus stop to Bondi not far. Circular Quay is walkable if you don't have very young children.

What could be improved: Fairly noisy at night but that's to be expected when the location is in the heart of the CBD

  • Great place to stay – only downside was traffic noise – Alison from Australia – 10 April 2025 (7/10)

Great location, comfy beds, well equipped kitchen

What could be improved: Location was great but traffic noise is significant

  • Loved it – Irene from Australia – 10 March 2025 (9/10)

The Windows and view and easy access to The Foundry Theatre at the star. Restaurants nearby and ferries.

What could be improved: Access to upstairs toilet during the night if sleeping downstairs on a bed settee.
