Meriton Suites Sussex Street, Sydney
Look, I’ve stayed at a lot of places in Sydney CBD, and the Meriton Suites on Sussex Street hits differently than most hotels. First thing you notice walking in? The lobby actually feels like a proper apartment building – which, honestly, it sort of is. These aren’t tiny hotel rooms crammed with two beds and a desk nobody uses. You’re getting actual suites with full kitchens, separate living areas, and windows that… well, let’s just say the views depend on which floor they stick you on, but even the lower floors give you that urban Sydney energy.
The location is what really sold me though. You’re literally a three-minute walk from Wynyard Station – I mean, you can see the station entrance from some of the rooms. And here’s something most people don’t realize until they’re there: you’re positioned perfectly between the business district and all the weekend stuff. Circular Quay is an easy stroll when you want to play tourist, but you’re also close enough to those little laneways around York Street where locals actually eat. The noise level surprised me too – Sussex Street gets busy during the day, but it’s not like staying on George Street where you hear every drunk person walking by at 2 AM.
What I really appreciated was having a proper kitchen. I know, I know – you’re on vacation, why cook? But being able to grab coffee and pastries from that little place on King Street and actually have somewhere to sit and eat them without perching on a hotel bed… it changes the whole experience. The apartments feel lived-in rather than sterile, which is refreshing after staying in cookie-cutter hotel rooms. Plus, the washing machine situation is clutch if you’re there for more than a few days – Sydney’s expensive enough without paying hotel laundry prices. The staff runs the place more like a residential building than a hotel, which means less hovering but also means you need to be a bit more independent. Check-in was smooth when I went (granted, this was off-season in May), but I’d imagine it gets hectic during peak summer months when everyone’s trying to get to the harbor. Honestly, for the price point and the space you get, especially if you’re staying more than just a weekend, it’s hard to beat in that part of the city.
