Meriton Suites Kent Street, Sydney
You know what struck me first about the Meriton Suites on Kent Street? It’s one of those places that actually feels like Sydney – not some generic hotel that could be anywhere. The lobby has this clean, modern Australian vibe without trying too hard, and honestly, the staff seemed genuinely happy to be there when I checked in around 3 PM on a Tuesday.
The location is pretty brilliant if you know Sydney at all. Kent Street puts you right in the thick of things without the chaos of George Street tourist madness. I mean, you’re literally a two-minute walk to Wynyard Station – which locals know is your gateway to basically everywhere – and Circular Quay is close enough that you can stroll to the Opera House without breaking a sweat. What I really loved though was being so close to the Rocks area. You can duck into those little laneways for coffee (there’s this spot on Nurses Walk that does incredible flat whites) or just wander the weekend markets without dealing with hotel shuttle schedules or expensive Ubers.
The suites themselves are surprisingly spacious – I’m talking actual apartment-style living, not those cramped hotel rooms where you’re bumping into furniture. The kitchen setup is legit useful too, which matters when you want to grab groceries from the Woolworths down the street instead of paying hotel breakfast prices every morning. The beds are comfortable enough that I actually slept well despite being on the 15th floor (Kent Street can get a bit noisy with traffic, but honestly, it’s white noise after the first night). What impressed me most was the attention to details – good water pressure in the shower, blackout curtains that actually work, and decent Wi-Fi that didn’t drop out every five minutes like some places I’ve stayed.
The building itself has that sleek, contemporary Australian architecture thing going on, and the views from the higher floors are genuinely spectacular. On clear days, you can see across to the harbor – not full harbor views mind you, but enough to remind you why Sydney’s special. I spent more time than I care to admit just standing by the window with my morning coffee, watching the city wake up below.
Here’s the thing about this place – it’s got that sweet spot between luxury and practicality that’s hard to find. Sure, it’s five stars and feels polished, but it’s not stuffy or pretentious. The pool area on the rooftop is actually usable (not just Instagram-worthy), and the gym has proper equipment if you’re into that sort of thing. Parking is available but pricey, which is pretty standard for Sydney CBD – though honestly, you won’t need a car much from this location.
If you’re looking for somewhere that feels authentically Sydney while still being comfortable and well-located, this place delivers. It’s not trying to be the fanciest hotel in the city, but it nails the fundamentals really well. The 8.2 rating feels about right – solidly excellent without being perfect, which is exactly what you want when you’re exploring a city like Sydney.
