Mercure Sydney
Look, I’ve stayed at the Mercure Sydney on George Street more times than I probably should admit, and honestly? It’s become my go-to spot when I need to be right in the thick of things without completely destroying my budget. The building itself is this solid, no-nonsense kind of place that sits perfectly in the CBD chaos – you know, close enough to everything that matters but not so fancy that you feel weird showing up in your travel clothes.
What I actually love about this place is how it gets the basics right without trying to be something it’s not. The rooms are clean and comfortable (though I mean, don’t expect huge spaces – this is Sydney CBD after all), and the staff genuinely seems to care about sorting you out when things go sideways. I remember one time my key card kept dying, and instead of that eye-roll treatment you get at some places, they actually figured out it was a problem with the door mechanism and moved me to a better room. The location is honestly hard to beat – you’re walking distance to Circular Quay, the Opera House, and all those tourist spots, but also close to the good coffee places on York Street that locals actually use. Plus, if you’re into late-night food runs, there’s decent options within stumbling distance.
The thing that keeps me coming back though is how it feels like a proper Sydney experience without the tourist trap vibe. You’ll see business travelers mixing with families, and the lobby has this lived-in energy that I find way more appealing than those sterile luxury places. Sure, George Street can get pretty hectic during the day – there’s construction noise and the usual city sounds – but the rooms are decently soundproofed, and honestly, if you’re staying in the CBD, you’re probably not planning to hibernate anyway. The bathrooms are solid (good water pressure, which matters more than people think), and they’ve got that reliable hotel WiFi that actually works when you need to video call home or get some work done. I wouldn’t call it a destination hotel or anything dramatic like that, but it’s the kind of place that makes you feel like you made a smart choice rather than just an expensive one.
