You know what caught me off guard about Markets Hotel? I was expecting another one of those generic roadside places on Parramatta Road – and honestly, there are plenty of those – but this spot actually has some character to it. The building itself sits right in the thick of Homebush, which means you’re basically a stone’s throw from ANZ Stadium (well, Accor Stadium now, but I still call it ANZ half the time). The location is sort of perfect if you’re not trying to be right in the CBD but still want decent access to everything.

The rooms are what you’d expect from a solid 3-star – clean, functional, with that slightly firm mattress that’s actually pretty comfortable once you get used to it. I mean, it’s not luxury, but the housekeeping is on point and the air conditioning works properly, which is honestly more than I can say for some pricier places I’ve stayed. What really impressed me was how quiet it gets at night, considering you’re literally on one of Sydney’s busiest roads. The windows must be decent quality because I barely heard the traffic. The staff at check-in were genuinely helpful too – not just going through the motions, but actually gave me useful tips about parking (which, by the way, is way easier here than trying to find a spot in the city center).

Here’s the thing that makes this place work: you’re in this weird sweet spot where you can walk to Homebush Bay and the waterfront areas, but you’re also right on the train line if you want to zip into Central Station. The local area has some surprisingly good food options – there’s this Lebanese place just down the road that locals actually go to, not just hotel guests. Plus, if you’re here for an event at the stadium or Olympic Park, you’ll thank yourself for not having to deal with the post-event transport chaos since you can literally walk back. I stayed during a State of Origin match, and while the area was buzzing, the hotel itself stayed pretty calm. The 7.9 rating makes sense to me – it’s doing everything right without trying to be something it’s not. Sometimes that’s exactly what you need.

  It had lots of things to do there. It had a cafe next door. I had everything I needed.

  The location is great close to all major areas. The cleaning staff so friendly and helpful, the hotel smells wonderful and is very clean. The beds are a dream.

  The staff were very helpful and nothing was too much trouble. The bistro had a simple but delicious menu and there is a really good area for those who like a punt on the horses. The location is a short Uber ride to the Olympic Park precinct.
  
  What could be improved: If your room is on the Parramatta Rd side of the hotel, bring some ear plugs, it can get quite noisy.

  Room was very clean and the bed was really comfortable. This is an older establishment but it was really good. The bistro on site served very good meal.
