So I stayed at the Luxury Designer Redfern House last month, and honestly? It’s one of those places where the name actually delivers. You know how Redfern’s been going through this whole transformation thing – well, this hotel sits right in the sweet spot of that change. It’s on Redfern Street, which means you’re literally a three-minute walk to the station (massive win if you’re doing the airport train thing), but far enough from the main Cleveland Street chaos that you can actually sleep.
The building itself is this gorgeous converted warehouse – I mean, you can tell they spent serious money on the renovation. The lobby has these industrial-high ceilings but somehow feels cozy, not intimidating. Check-in was surprisingly smooth, though I’d avoid arriving around 6 PM when the business travelers descend. My room was on the third floor facing the street, and while there’s some traffic noise during the day, it settles down pretty nicely after 9 PM. The design is what I’d call “Instagram-worthy but actually functional” – you’ve got your exposed brick walls, but also proper storage and a bathroom where you won’t bump your elbows. The bed was genuinely comfortable, none of that hotel mattress guesswork.
What really got me was the little details. The coffee machine in the room is actually decent (rare!), and they stock local roasts from Single O, which tells you they’re not just phoning it in. The mini-bar pricing won’t make you weep, and there’s a 24-hour market two blocks down on Gibbons Street if you need actual snacks. Location-wise, you’re perfectly positioned – Surry Hills is right there for dinner, the city’s a quick train ride, and if you want to explore somewhere different, Newtown’s just a pleasant walk through the backstreets. I spent one evening just wandering around the neighborhood, checking out the street art and stumbling into this little wine bar on Cope Street that I never would’ve found otherwise.
The only minor gripe I had was the Wi-Fi gets a bit spotty on the upper floors during busy periods, and the elevator’s… well, it’s vintage character, let’s say. But honestly, for a solid 4-star place in this part of Sydney, you’re getting good value. The staff clearly know their stuff too – the front desk guy gave me better restaurant recommendations than most travel blogs. It’s not trying to be the fanciest hotel in the city, but it nails what it’s going for: stylish, comfortable, and genuinely well-located. If you’re the type who likes staying somewhere with personality rather than another generic chain, this place hits the mark.
You need to let the property know what time you'll be arriving in advance.
