You know what caught me off guard about Hotel Morris? Walking up Pitt Street, I honestly expected another glass box hotel, but this place has actual character. The Handwritten Collection branding isn’t just marketing fluff – there’s something genuinely boutique about how they’ve done things here. The lobby feels more like a well-designed friend’s apartment than a corporate hotel space, with these interesting art pieces and furniture that actually looks comfortable instead of just photogenic.

The location is pretty brilliant if you know Sydney at all. You’re right in Haymarket, which means you can walk to Chinatown in about three minutes (seriously, turn left and you’re there), but you’re also close enough to the main CBD that getting to Circular Quay or the Opera House is just a quick train ride or a decent walk if the weather’s nice. What I really appreciated was being near Central Station – makes airport transfers so much easier, and honestly, most visitors underestimate how handy that is. The street can get a bit busy during rush hour, but the rooms are well-insulated so it’s not really an issue.

Staff-wise, they seem to get that travelers want actual help, not just scripted responses. When I asked about getting to some of the less touristy spots in Surry Hills, the front desk guy gave me specific street names and even mentioned which cafes were worth the walk. The rooms themselves are thoughtfully designed – not huge by any means, but everything has its place, and the beds are genuinely comfortable (I’m picky about this). The bathrooms are modern without being sterile, and there’s decent water pressure, which… well, you know how hit-or-miss that can be in city hotels. I mean, it’s not luxury-level, but for a solid 4-star place, it delivers on the basics really well.

What really sold me on the place was the attention to those little details that make traveling less annoying. Good lighting for actually reading, enough power outlets positioned where you need them, and – this might sound small – but the air conditioning actually works properly and quietly. The 8.3 rating makes sense to me; it’s the kind of place that does what it promises without any nasty surprises. If you’re looking for something with personality in a genuinely useful location, and you don’t need a rooftop pool or marble everything, Hotel Morris hits that sweet spot between boutique charm and practical comfort.

  The staff were great and it was only a two minute walk to the Capital Theatre. The Westfield (tower experience) and Darling Harbour are also within walking distance.
  The hotel is restored beautifully, nice and quiet at night even though it is centrally located. The bar has a lovely ambiance to sit and have a drink. We will definitely return.
