Hotel Description
You know what? I wasn’t expecting much when I first walked up to Hotel Diplomat Sydney – honestly, Bayswater Road can be a bit hit or miss in Potts Point. But this place actually surprised me in the best way. It’s got that classic Sydney hotel vibe without trying too hard, if that makes sense. The building itself has character (you can tell it’s been around), and when you step inside, there’s this nice balance between polished and lived-in. The lobby’s not huge, but it doesn’t feel cramped either – just right for checking in without feeling like you’re in some massive corporate machine.
What really won me over was the location, though I mean, Potts Point gets a bad rap sometimes, but this stretch is actually perfect. You’re literally a two-minute walk from Kings Cross station, which is clutch for getting around the city, and El Alamein Fountain is right there if you need a decent spot to sit with coffee. The staff seemed to actually know the neighborhood too – when I asked about breakfast spots, they didn’t just point me toward the hotel restaurant but mentioned this little place on Macleay Street that locals actually go to. Speaking of breakfast, theirs is solid (nothing fancy, but you won’t leave hungry), and the rooms are… well, they’re comfortable. Not Instagram-perfect, but everything works, the bed’s good, and the bathroom’s clean. I stayed on the third floor and it was surprisingly quiet considering you’re in the middle of everything – though I’d probably avoid the street-facing rooms if you’re a light sleeper.
Here’s the thing about Hotel Diplomat – it’s not trying to be the fanciest place in Sydney, and that’s exactly why it works. The 4-star rating feels honest, and that 8.1 score makes sense when you consider what you’re getting for the price. It’s the kind of place where you can dump your bags, get cleaned up, and head out to explore without feeling like you’re missing out on some amazing hotel experience. The elevator’s a bit slow (fair warning), but the wifi’s decent, and there’s actually parking if you’re brave enough to drive in Sydney. I’d definitely stay here again, especially if I wanted to be close to the action in Kings Cross and the CBD without paying those ridiculous harbor-view prices. Plus, you’re walking distance to some genuinely good restaurants along Darlinghurst Road – just ask the front desk, they’ll point you in the right direction.

Reviews
Nice place, but lacks customer service – Bart from Australia – 13 July 2025 (7/10)
– Tomer was very accomodating (once I was actually able to reach him)
– the location is fantastic
– the bed is super comfy
What could be improved: – impossible to reach customer service in a timely manner. I had to wait outside for 15 min when I checked in and more than 2 hours at checkout
– to Goki app they use is a good idea if you never need to contact someone but if you do, be careful because you’ll have to wait a long time for a reply
– the phone number in the Goki app doesn’t work either so there is really no way to get supportGood – Katie from Australia – 10 July 2025 (7/10)
Good location
What could be improved: Quite loud areaA stones throw from Sydney’s highlights without the crowds – Liana from Australia – 26 June 2025 (7/10)
The central location is definitely the star of this lovely hotel. Situated right at the top of kings cross, it had all the convenience right at your fingertips. It was a very easy trip via public transport from the airport, and was easy to navigate via transport and walking. If definitely recommend it as a home base for a quick Sydney trip, especially if you’re not too keen on being smack bang in the middle of the hustle and bustle of the Martin Place and surrounds.
What could be improved: The property is a little older, but it’s clear that effort has been made to update it.Very happy and will stay again – Phil from Australia – 23 June 2025 (9/10)
Ease of booking, proactive staff
Entry via phone is good
What could be improved: TV didn’t work at first but was quickly rectifiedComfortable, central and clean – Epeli from Fiji – 17 June 2025 (8/10)
I like the central location and clean facilities. Use of Goki App made everything so easy to access my room and hotel late at night.
What could be improved: Nothing reallyDelightful 😊 – Australatin from Australia – 9 June 2025 (9/10)
Location, cleanliness, staff attention
What could be improved: Nothing pretty much, although slight lower pricing would have been perfectWeekend away in Sydney – Andrew from United Kingdom – 8 June 2025 (9/10)
The hotel had what you needed for a short stay and was in a great location just round the corner from Kings Cross station. Slyvia was very welcoming and helped give us a lot of good advice for the area. The rooms have a keyless door using bluetooth from a code on your phone to open. Would stay here again.
What could be improved: Shower door wasn't completely sealed which meant water was escaping, but that is only nit-pickingWill choose again – James from Australia – 1 June 2025 (9/10)
Staff were amazing
What could be improved: A bigger external sign ?Great value – Dean from Australia – 31 May 2025 (8/10)
Great design, clean and comfortable. Excellent location. Friendly staff.
Great location close to public transport, grocery, health store & restaurants. The reception team is superb, very ac – Ermina from Singapore – 27 May 2025 (9/10)
Location + the welcoming & service oriented reception & manager. I was promptly moved to a better room when requested. Front rooms facing Bayswater Rd are great.
What could be improved: During my stay, there are still some interior works ongoing (occasional noise during the day) & items that I expected to be in the room (having stayed multiple times when it was still Bayswater Hotel) are missing – i.e. desk & table lamp.
