Hilton Sydney
Look, I’ve stayed at a lot of hotels in Sydney over the years, and the Hilton on George Street – well, it’s one of those places that actually gets the location thing right. I mean, you walk out the front door and you’re literally in the thick of everything. The QVB is maybe a two-minute walk if you’re moving slowly, and honestly, that’s where you’ll probably end up browsing anyway because the shopping there is incredible. But here’s what I really love about this spot – you can duck down to Wynyard Station without even thinking about it, which means getting to the harbor or out to the beaches is stupidly easy.
The rooms themselves are… well, they’re proper five-star without being stuffy about it. I stayed on the 38th floor last time (you know how they always try to upgrade you when you mention it’s your anniversary), and the view toward the harbor was pretty spectacular, especially around sunset. The beds are those crazy comfortable ones where you actually sleep through the night, which doesn’t always happen when you’re dealing with jet lag. What surprised me was how quiet it was – George Street can get pretty hectic during the day with all the buses and general city chaos, but somehow you don’t really hear it once you’re up there. The bathrooms are marble-heavy in that classic hotel way, though I wish they’d do something about the lighting – it’s a bit harsh when you’re trying to wake up gently.
Staff-wise, they’ve got that professional-but-friendly thing down pat. Check-in was smooth even though we arrived during what seemed like peak tourist season (I think it was just after New Year’s), and the concierge actually gave us some solid recommendations that weren’t just the obvious tourist traps. They pointed us toward this little wine bar on Bligh Street that we never would have found otherwise. The fitness center is decent if you’re into that sort of thing, though it gets crowded around 7 AM when all the business travelers are trying to squeeze in a workout before meetings.
Here’s the thing though – and I’m being honest here because I hate when hotel descriptions gloss over this stuff – it’s not cheap. You’re paying for that location and the reliability factor, which, if you’re only in Sydney for a few days, is probably worth it. Plus, there’s something to be said for staying somewhere that just works without any drama. The elevators are fast, the WiFi actually functions, and when you ask for extra towels, they show up. Sometimes that’s exactly what you need, especially if you’re planning to spend most of your time exploring the city anyway. The whole Circular Quay area is walkable from here, and that’s where you’ll want to be for the Opera House and harbor stuff.
Guests are required to show a photo ID and credit card at check-in.
