You know what struck me first about Coogee Treetops? The name actually makes sense – you’re literally nestled up in the canopy, and from certain angles you get these glimpses of Coogee Beach through the branches. It’s this sort of elevated hideaway that feels removed from the beach chaos but you can still hear the waves if you listen carefully. The whole place has this relaxed, almost residential vibe that I honestly wasn’t expecting from a 4-star spot in Sydney.

The location is pretty brilliant, actually. You’re about a 7-minute walk down to Coogee Beach proper, but far enough up the hill that you escape the weekend crowds and those groups of backpackers who tend to camp out near the sand. I mean, don’t get me wrong – Coogee’s got great energy – but sometimes you want to retreat somewhere quieter, you know? The walk back up is a bit of a climb (fair warning if you’re not used to Sydney’s hills), but it’s worth it for that sense of being tucked away. Plus, you’re right near that little strip of cafes on Carr Street – there’s this place called Gertrude & Alice that does incredible coffee and feels very much like a local secret.

What really sets this place apart is the attention to detail without being fussy about it. The rooms have this comfortable, lived-in quality – think quality linens and thoughtful touches rather than flashy amenities. The staff actually seem to know the neighborhood well, which is rarer than you’d think. When I asked about the best time to hit the coastal walk, the guy at reception gave me this whole spiel about morning light and which cafes to stop at along the way. Parking can be a bit tight (it’s Sydney, after all), but they’ve sorted that out better than most places in the area. The whole check-in experience was refreshingly straightforward – no upselling, just genuine recommendations about what to do nearby. Honestly, that 9.2 rating feels about right. It’s not trying to be the fanciest hotel in Sydney, but it nails that sweet spot of comfort, location, and actually understanding what travelers want when they’re exploring this part of the coast.
