So I’ll be honest – when I first rolled up to the Coogee Riviera on Bay Road, I wasn’t expecting much. I mean, it’s right there on the main strip where all the backpacker hostels are, and you know how that usually goes. But actually stepping inside? Completely different story. This place has that classic Australian coastal hotel vibe down pat – think polished timber, clean lines, and those massive windows that actually make you stop and stare at the ocean view.
The thing about staying here is the location is pretty much perfect if you want to do Coogee properly. You’re literally a two-minute walk to the beach (and I mean the good part of the beach, not the rocky bit near the car park), plus you’re right in the thick of things when it comes to the cafe scene. That little stretch between the hotel and Coogee Bay Hotel gets absolutely packed on weekend mornings – everyone’s queuing up for coffee at Three Blue Ducks or grabbing breakfast at one of those places that does the smashed avo thing really well. The rooms themselves are solid – I stayed in one of the ocean-facing ones and honestly, waking up to that view of the bay every morning never got old. The beds are actually comfortable (you know how hit-or-miss hotel beds can be), and the bathrooms are modern without being too fancy. What I really appreciated was the attention to detail – proper blackout curtains, decent water pressure, and enough power outlets that you’re not playing musical chairs with your devices.
Here’s what you should know before booking: parking can be a bit of a nightmare during summer weekends, but there’s street parking if you’re willing to walk a block or two. The hotel’s got its own spots but they fill up fast. Also, if you’re a light sleeper, maybe request a room away from Bay Road – it’s not terrible, but there’s definitely some traffic noise, especially when people are heading home from the pubs on Friday nights. The staff are genuinely helpful too, which sounds like such a basic thing but you’d be surprised how often that’s not the case. They actually know the area and can point you toward the good walking tracks (the Coogee to Bondi coastal walk starts basically at your doorstep) or tell you which restaurants are worth the splurge. One thing I loved was how they managed to keep that neighborhood feel even though it’s clearly a proper hotel – you’ll see the same faces at reception, and they remember your name after a day or two. For a 4-star place, the Coogee Riviera delivers exactly what you want from a Sydney beach stay without any of the pretentious nonsense you sometimes get closer to the city.
You need to let the property know what time you'll be arriving in advance.
