Capella Sydney
Look, I’ve stayed at my fair share of fancy hotels in Sydney, but Capella Sydney actually made me slow down and notice things. You know that feeling when you walk into a place and immediately think “okay, they get it”? That’s what happened here. It’s tucked away on Loftus Street – not the main drag where all the tourists are stampeding around, but close enough that you can walk to Circular Quay in about eight minutes (I timed it because I’m weird like that).
The building itself is this gorgeous heritage-listed thing that used to be the Department of Education building, and honestly, they’ve done something pretty special with the renovation. The lobby has these soaring ceilings and original sandstone walls that make you feel like you’re somewhere important without being stuffy about it. I mean, the staff actually remembers your name after one conversation, which is… refreshing. My room overlooked the harbor – well, sort of, you have to crane your neck a bit but it’s there – and the interiors have this warm, residential feel that doesn’t scream “hotel room.” The bathroom marble is legitimately beautiful, and the shower pressure is exactly what you want after walking around the city all day.
What really got me though was the attention to the little things. The bedside controls actually make sense (revolutionary, I know). There’s a proper coffee machine, not some pod nonsense. The minibar is stocked with local stuff – Archie Rose gin, which if you haven’t tried it, you should. The concierge team knows their stuff too; they sent me to this tiny wine bar in The Rocks that I never would have found otherwise. Location-wise, you’re literally a two-minute walk from the MCA and maybe five from the Opera House, but here’s the thing – Loftus Street is quiet enough that you’re not dealing with the constant hum of George Street traffic. I slept like a rock, which doesn’t always happen in the CBD. The only minor thing is that getting an Uber can be slightly tricky since it’s not a main street, but honestly, everything’s so walkable from here that it barely matters. If you’re looking for that sweet spot between luxury and actually feeling like you’re staying somewhere with character – not just another glass tower with fancy thread counts – this place nails it.
