You know what struck me first about Camperdown? Walking up to 99 Australia Street, I honestly wasn’t expecting much from the exterior – it’s this beautifully converted heritage building that somehow manages to feel both historic and completely modern. The whole Camperdown area has been quietly transforming over the past few years, and this place is sort of the perfect example of that evolution.
The thing about staying here is that you’re actually in one of Sydney’s most underrated neighborhoods. I mean, everyone talks about staying in the CBD or near the harbor, but Camperdown puts you right in the heart of where locals actually live and work. You’ve got the University of Sydney practically next door, which means great coffee shops that aren’t tourist traps – there’s this little place on Parramatta Road that does the best flat whites, and the hotel staff actually told me about it instead of directing me to some overpriced chain. The Royal Prince Alfred Hospital is close by too, so you’ll see a mix of university students, medical professionals, and families just going about their day. It feels authentically Sydney in a way that’s hard to find in the more obvious hotel districts.
What really gets me about this place is the attention to architectural detail – they’ve clearly spent serious money on the renovation, but it doesn’t feel flashy or show-offy. The rooms have these gorgeous high ceilings (must be at least 12 feet), and the way they’ve integrated modern amenities without destroying the building’s character is honestly impressive. I stayed during a particularly busy weekend when the university had some event going on, and even then, the soundproofing was excellent. The only minor thing I’d mention is that parking can be a bit tricky – there’s street parking, but you know how Sydney parking is. The front desk sorted it out though, and they seem to have arrangements with nearby lots. Check-in was smooth, no pretentious lobby scene, just friendly people who clearly know the neighborhood well. They gave me a local map with handwritten notes about which bus routes to take to get to Circular Quay (way faster than you’d think) and even mentioned that Saturday mornings, there’s a farmers market at Carriageworks that’s a pleasant 15-minute walk away. That’s the kind of local knowledge that makes a difference.

A beautifully designed and immaculately presented property in the middle of inner-west Sydney. Only a short walk away from so many restaurants and bars in Newtown but also a quiet retreat to unwind in. Thank you William – the stay was one of my favourites in Sydney!
