Look, I’ll be honest – when I first saw “stay above a café” in the name, I was worried about noise and weird coffee smells at 6 AM. But honestly? This little spot on Carter Street completely surprised me. The café downstairs (which actually makes incredible flat whites, by the way) closes at a reasonable hour, so you’re not dealing with espresso machine sounds all night. Plus, you wake up to the most amazing coffee aroma drifting up – it’s like having your own personal barista alarm clock.

The location is pretty brilliant if you know Sydney at all. Cammeray’s one of those neighborhoods that feels properly local without being boring – you’re literally a five-minute walk to the wharf where you can catch ferries straight into Circular Quay. I mean, forget about driving into the city and dealing with parking nightmares. The walk down to the water is actually gorgeous too, especially if you time it right for sunset. There’s this little park nearby where locals walk their dogs, and honestly, it gave me a better sense of real Sydney life than staying in some massive hotel in the Rocks would have.

What really won me over was the attention to detail – and I don’t mean fancy toiletries (though those were nice). The two free coffees per day thing isn’t just a gimmick; the café staff actually remembers your order after the first day, which is such a small thing but made it feel less like a transaction and more like, well, staying in a neighborhood where people know you. The room itself is surprisingly quiet for being above a business – good windows, I guess – and the bed was actually comfortable, not just “hotel comfortable.” You know what I mean? The kind where you don’t wake up with a weird crick in your neck.

The only thing that might bug some people is that it’s not a traditional hotel setup – there’s no fancy lobby to hang out in, no room service, that sort of thing. But honestly, that’s part of what makes it work. You’re staying in a real neighborhood where you can walk to the IGA for snacks, grab dinner at the Thai place around the corner (which locals actually eat at, not just tourists), or just sit by the harbor and watch the ferries come and go. Check-in was refreshingly straightforward too – no waiting around in line behind tour groups.

I’d definitely stay here again, especially if I wanted to feel less like a tourist and more like I was actually visiting Sydney rather than just hitting the major attractions. The 4-star rating feels right – it’s not trying to be the Park Hyatt, but it’s doing exactly what it sets out to do really well. Plus, that ferry ride into the city every morning with your excellent coffee in hand? That’s honestly worth the stay alone.

  Good location and close to bus stop. Just above a good cafe. Owner was nice enough to provide us 2 free barista coffee every day. It was very nice and tidy. Kitchen and bathroom are modern. Downstairs cafe owner was very nice and helpful.
  
  What could be improved: No spare rubbish bags were provided so I used shopping bags as rubbish bag which is ok. The fridge sometimes makes noise at night time. But it is not a big issue.
