You know what surprised me about the Bridgeview Hotel Willoughby? It’s actually one of those places that grows on you the longer you stay. I’ll be honest – when I first pulled up to 580 Willoughby Road, I wasn’t expecting much from a 3-star spot. The building itself is pretty straightforward, nothing fancy, but there’s something refreshingly unpretentious about it that I appreciated after dealing with overly polished chain hotels.

The location is honestly pretty clever if you know Sydney’s North Shore at all. Willoughby Road is this main artery that locals use to avoid the Warringah Freeway mess, and you’re literally a 5-minute walk from Willoughby Station – which means you can be in the CBD in about 20 minutes without dealing with parking nightmares. I mean, that alone saves you probably $40 a day in city parking fees. The street can get a bit busy during morning rush hour (around 7-8 AM), but it quiets down nicely after that. There’s a decent coffee shop called The Grind just two blocks down that the hotel staff actually recommended – turns out they do a proper flat white and the barista knows half the neighborhood by name.

What really won me over was the staff’s genuine helpfulness. The woman at check-in (I think her name was Sarah?) actually drew me a little map showing the best route to Chatswood Chase and warned me about the roadworks on the Pacific Highway. These are the kinds of touches that make a difference when you’re trying to navigate an unfamiliar area. The rooms are clean and functional – nothing Instagram-worthy, but the beds are surprisingly comfortable and the air conditioning works properly, which is more than I can say for some pricier places I’ve stayed. The shower pressure is actually decent too, though the bathroom tiles look like they haven’t been updated since the 90s. Honestly though, for what you’re paying, it’s totally fine. I noticed they keep the common areas quite tidy, and there’s always fresh coffee in the lobby – small things, but they add up. The Wi-Fi worked well enough for video calls, which was important since I was there for business. If you’re looking for a straightforward, no-nonsense place to crash that won’t break the bank and puts you in a genuinely livable Sydney neighborhood rather than some tourist trap, the Bridgeview does the job well.

  What could be improved: I had to ask to be moved as smoke alarm was in need of new battery and making strange noises. Also the doorknob very shaky on room door when moved. The bathroom and toilets need maintenance no toilet seat cover and pipes looking tired and a bit rusty.

  It's really convenient for my work. It's easy to get to and from the airport and the CBD. Room service food is good but there's plenty of choice around in Willoughby Road
  
  What could be improved: I work shift work so bit disappointed when the Wifi went off at night – but when it was on it was good! There was a bit of confusion when I checked but that was sorted out by the next day.
