I’ll be honest – when I first walked into Azzurro Boutique Hotel, I wasn’t sure what to expect. The entrance on Flinders Street is pretty understated, which I actually loved after dealing with some of those overly flashy hotel lobbies elsewhere in Sydney. But once you’re inside, there’s this immediate sense that someone really thought about the details here. The space feels intimate without being cramped, and you know what? The staff actually remembered my name after the first day, which doesn’t happen often at bigger places.

The location is really something special if you know Sydney at all. You’re technically in Darlinghurst, but you’re basically on the border with Surry Hills – hence the name, I guess. What this means practically is that you can walk to some of the best coffee shops in the city (there’s this little place called Reuben Hills just a few blocks away that locals absolutely swear by), but you’re also close enough to the CBD that you’re not spending your whole budget on Ubers. I mean, Hyde Park is literally across the street, which is perfect for morning runs or when you need to escape the city buzz for a bit. The Oxford Street action is right there too, though fair warning – it can get a bit noisy on weekend nights if you’re a light sleeper.

What really sets Azzurro apart though is how they’ve managed to feel boutique-y without being pretentious about it. The rooms aren’t huge – this is Sydney, after all – but they’re thoughtfully designed with these gorgeous timber floors and actually comfortable beds. The bathrooms have decent water pressure (trust me, I’ve stayed at places where this was definitely not the case), and there’s proper blackout curtains which saved my life during jet lag recovery. The whole place has this sort of relaxed European vibe that works really well in this part of the city. Parking can be a bit tricky since it’s street parking mostly, but honestly, you probably won’t need a car much from this spot anyway. I found myself just walking everywhere or jumping on the train at Museum Station when I needed to get to the harbor. The 8.2 rating makes sense to me – it’s solidly good without trying to be something it’s not, and sometimes that’s exactly what you want when you’re exploring a city like Sydney.
