So I stumbled across 57Hotel on Foveaux Street during my last Sydney trip, and honestly – it’s one of those places that gets Surry Hills just right. You know how some hotels try too hard to be “boutique” and end up feeling fake? This isn’t that. The building itself has this understated industrial thing going on, which makes perfect sense when you’re basically in the heart of one of Sydney’s most creative neighborhoods.
What really struck me was how the staff actually seemed to know the area – like, really know it. When I asked about coffee (because, priorities), the guy at reception didn’t just point me toward some chain. He sent me to Sample Coffee around the corner on Devonshire Street, which turned out to be exactly the kind of place I’d been hoping to find. The rooms themselves feel properly designed rather than just decorated, if that makes sense. Mine had these great big windows that let in heaps of natural light, and the bed was honestly one of the better hotel beds I’ve slept in – firm but not rock-hard. There’s something refreshing about a place that doesn’t try to cram every possible amenity into the room but instead focuses on getting the basics really, really right.
The location is actually brilliant once you realize what you’re working with. Foveaux Street might not sound familiar if you’re not from Sydney, but you’re literally a five-minute walk from Crown Street’s restaurant strip and maybe ten minutes from Central Station if you need to get anywhere else. I mean, I walked to the CBD a couple times just because I could – it’s that close. The neighborhood gets properly lively in the evenings (there’s this energy that spills out from all the bars and eateries), but the hotel itself stays surprisingly quiet. I was a bit worried about street noise, but the windows must be decent because I slept fine even on Friday night. Parking’s a bit of a mission, like anywhere in Surry Hills, but there’s a Wilson parking station practically next door if you’re driving. Check-in was smooth – no drama, no waiting around, just the way it should be. The whole vibe feels like someone put thought into creating a place where you’d actually want to stay, not just crash between tourist activities. With an 8.4 rating, it’s clearly hitting the mark for most people, and I can see why. It’s not trying to be the fanciest place in Sydney, but it nails that sweet spot of being comfortable, well-located, and genuinely connected to what makes this part of the city special.
