Look, I’ll be straight with you about this place on Nickson Street – it’s one of those apartments that sounds better on paper than it actually is. I mean, the location in Surry Hills is genuinely fantastic (you’re literally a five-minute walk to Central Station and maybe ten to the CBD), but there’s a reason it’s sitting at a 6 rating despite being marketed as a 4-star spot.
The apartment itself is spacious enough for six people, though honestly, that’d be pushing it unless you’re really comfortable with each other. Two proper bedrooms, but someone’s definitely ending up on the couch or a fold-out situation. The whole setup feels a bit… well, functional rather than cozy, if you know what I mean. It’s clean and has everything you need – decent kitchen, working WiFi, air conditioning that actually works (crucial in Sydney summers) – but it lacks that homey touch you’d hope for. The furniture screams “budget rental,” and there’s this weird echo in the main living area that took me a while to get used to. Also, heads up about the street noise – Nickson Street isn’t exactly a main thoroughfare, but you’ll hear the occasional late-night reveler stumbling home from the pubs on Crown Street.
What actually saves this place is the neighborhood. Surry Hills has this incredible energy, especially around the corner where you hit Crown and Bourke Streets. There’s this little coffee spot called Reuben Hills maybe three blocks away that does the best flat white I’ve had outside of Melbourne (don’t tell my Melbourne friends I said that). The Woolworths on Crown Street is your closest grocery option, and it’s decent enough for stocking up the apartment’s kitchen. Parking is… well, it’s Sydney, so good luck with that. Street parking is a nightmare, and I didn’t see any dedicated spots mentioned. You’re honestly better off using public transport anyway – Central Station is right there, and the light rail can get you to Darling Harbour in minutes.
The thing is, for what you’re paying, you’re really buying the location more than the experience. If you’re the type who just needs a place to crash between exploring the city, hitting up the galleries on Foveaux Street, or checking out the weekend markets, then the apartment does its job. But if you’re looking for something that feels special or particularly memorable, you might want to look elsewhere. I stayed here during a busy weekend in March, and while it served its purpose, I found myself spending as little time as possible actually in the apartment. The whole building feels a bit institutional, and the check-in process was pretty impersonal – keypad entry, minimal interaction, very much a “here’s your temporary housing” vibe rather than genuine hospitality.

The location is great. It is convenient to walk or take bus to nearby attractions. The surrounding is nice and quiet.
What could be improved: The bedrooms are not clean and one of shower cannot be used. Only 1 quilt for each bedroom without extra blanket. The lights are not working properly in lounge room and dinning area. The air conditioner is very noisy.Short – Bill from Australia – 30 June 2025 (8/10)

The location was ideal for us.
What could be improved: I requested to cancel this booking when I found out the owner only had an international number. I was denied this request and assured the reservation would go well. I received a very short email with vague check in instructions. The owner stated a video would also be sent but this did not get emailed.
Upon arrival after an 11 hour flight, We had trouble finding the key to access the property and the phone number for the owner was not a functional number. We reached out to booking.com and they were unable to reach the owner as well. We were outside in 10 degree weather at 9pm with three young children for an hour of searching. We finally found the key across the street hidden by construction work. I have included a photo indicating where the key was and where the front door is. Only by prayers and perseverance did we find this.
